Sudbury, ON — Sixteen-year-old Kaylie Smith, a young woman with a bright future ahead, is now facing a life-altering journey after surviving a brutal assault by her 18-year-old ex-boyfriend. This violent incident has left her with severe injuries and permanent disfigurement, rallying her family and the Sudbury community in a powerful show of support as they help her through an uncertain and challenging recovery.

The attack, described by family members as “vicious,” inflicted lasting physical and emotional scars that Kaylie will carry with her for life. Hospitalized in the wake of the assault, Kaylie is awake and able to communicate—a testament to her strength and resilience. However, the road to healing will be a lengthy one, requiring both mental and physical therapy as she begins to navigate life after trauma.

Her cousin, Paige Smith, shared insight into the impact of the incident and the journey that lies ahead. “Kaylie is awake and talking, but it’s going to be a long road. The attack left her mutilated and disfigured for the rest of her life. As a family, we’re pulling together to support her every step of the way, but right now, recovery is very much a day-by-day process,” Paige explained. “She’ll need multiple kinds of therapy, and no one knows what her future holds—whether she’ll be able to work again or live a normal life.”

Despite these unimaginable hardships, Kaylie’s spirit remains strong, inspiring everyone around her. Her family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover the substantial expenses involved in her care and rehabilitation. The funds raised will support her journey through extensive treatment to aid her physical and emotional recovery and help her adapt to a new reality. The family’s goal is to provide Kaylie with the resources she needs to build a future that is fulfilling and stable, whatever challenges may arise.

“We’re planning to put a large portion of the funds into a trust for her when she reaches adulthood, so she’ll have the opportunity to pursue her dreams, whatever they may be,” said Paige. “And we’re incredibly grateful for everyone’s kindness. Every donation is a step closer to giving Kaylie the future she deserves.”

Kaylie’s family remains hopeful that with time, unwavering support, and her inner resilience, she will emerge from this tragedy with the strength to rebuild her life. As she confronts this uncertain future, the community stands united behind her, committed to seeing her through every step of the journey.

For those who wish to support Kaylie and her family, donations can be made through her GoFundMe Page. The family is also welcoming words of encouragement and support, which can be sent to justiceforkaylie@outlook.com. Each contribution and message brings Kaylie closer to a brighter future, showing her that she is not alone in this fight.

What’s Happening Sudbury is hoping that Kaylie recovers very soon, and we would like to extend our gratitude to Paige Smith for allowing us to share this information. We also want to thank Paige for providing us with pictures and for her guidance in writing this article.

Bill 274, Intimate Partner Violence Disclosure Act, 2021 was stalled in parliament. Speak up, speak out! I have messaged several government officials and nobody ever responds. it is absolutely sickening that women have to deal with abuse on a daily basis yet if you try to find out about a potential partner's history of violence you are BLOCKED. seriously! a bunch of other provinces in Canada have a Intimate Partner Violence disclosure act but ONTARIO DOES NOT! Come on get with it Ontario.
